Published on August 8, 2019, many parents find themselves wondering where the time went as the holiday season approaches. For single or working parents, the added pressure of managing work and childcare responsibilities can be daunting.
Fortunately, there are several contingency measures you can put in place to make the holidays enjoyable for both you and your children.
Plan Ahead ¶
Before the holidays creep in by surprise, find out when your children's school will be closing, for how long, and if there are any activities or assignments they need to complete before the break. This will give you a clear understanding of how to plan your time and theirs accordingly.
Ask for Help ¶
If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't be afraid to reach out to a family member or spouse for assistance. Taking care of yourself is essential, so you can be there for your children. Consider having a trusted relative come over or sending your kids to a trusted relative for a few days. Alternatively, you can hire a nanny to care for them, but make sure she's reliable and well-versed in childcare.
Keep Your Children Busy ¶
Engage your children in activities that will keep them occupied and prevent boredom. Create a simple holiday activity schedule and involve them in creating it. This will ensure they're doing things they enjoy, making it easier to follow the schedule.
Sign Them Up for Classes ¶
If your child has a talent for art, drawing, or dance, consider enrolling them in classes. Not only will this help build their confidence, but it will also give you some much-needed time to yourself.
Take a Family Vacation ¶
Taking a holiday with your children can be a great way to create new memories and experiences. Pack right, inform them of the trip in advance, and involve them in the planning process. This will ensure they're excited and eager to please.
Establish Holiday Rules ¶
Just because your children are not in school doesn't mean all school day rules become obsolete. Make some necessary adjustments and let them know. For example, you can relax bedtime, allow friends to sleep over, or extend playtime. However, don't do away with rules entirely, as this can create confusion.
