Residents of Githongo in Central Imenti are up in arms over the lack of a sewerage system in the town, which they claim poses a significant health risk to the community.
According to residents, residential plots in the town release sewage into the streets, creating an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects.
Isaiah Kirera, a local clinic owner, warned that the open sewers are a health risk, especially since they are located next to houses and eateries.
Joseph Kirimi, a butcher, attributed the problem to plot owners who have failed to install proper sewerage systems.
Marathi Location Chief Douglas Muthamia acknowledged that the shopping centre, which has a population of about 6,000 residents, has no sewerage system.
Ward Representative Patrick Muthuri called for urgent action by the Public Health Department to address the issue.
“The population in Githongo has grown, and needs a proper drainage system,” he said.
