On August 8, 2019, US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle Mccarter officially opened the annual Media Council Summit in Nairobi, where he announced his government's commitment to supporting the Kenyan media.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Mccarter emphasized the importance of accountability and credibility in the media, stating that his government would provide training for investigative journalists to help them accurately report on issues.
The ambassador also commended the Kenyan government for ensuring press freedom in the country, while calling on media personnel to exercise this freedom responsibly and with credibility.
He further encouraged the Kenyan media to speak out on the truth without fear of retribution, assuring that his government would continue to protect journalistic freedom.
Additionally, Ambassador Mccarter called on journalists to shun the culture of handouts, which he said compromises their duties.
He expressed his vision for Kenya as a prosperous nation, not dependent on foreign aid, and encouraged the Kenyan media to play a key role in achieving this vision.
