August 8, 2019, marked a significant development in the Nzoia Sugar saga, with top political leaders in Bungoma canvassing for the dissolution of the board of directors.
Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati and Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi have accused the board, led by former Webuye MP Joash Wamangoli, of failing to address the cash crisis at the company.
The lawmakers claim that the board has been ineffective in coming up with policies to turn the company around, resulting in cash flow problems that have left farmers and workers unpaid.
Wamunyinyi threatened to storm the company premises and eject the directors if the government does not heed to their demands.
He also accused the chairman of holding frequent meetings to pocket allowances, while the farmers and workers go hungry.
Wamangoli, however, denied the allegations, saying that Wamunyinyi has been against him since his appointment for reasons best known to him.
The chairman challenged Wamunyinyi to tell Kenyans how he had run down the company, instead of issuing sweeping statements.
