On May 19, 2019, supporters of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala gathered at Kisumu Central Police Station, calling for his immediate release from custody.

The Senator's detention had sparked public outrage, particularly due to the denial of his diabetes medication and food.

Earlier, it was reported that the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Noordin Haji, had ordered Malala's release, but this had not been implemented.

Malala's supporters had been camping at the police station since 5 pm, carrying prepared meals for the Senator. However, they were denied access, leading to growing impatience and chants demanding Malala's release from 7:30 pm onwards.

According to the Senator's lawyer, they were waiting for the DCI to process Malala's release.

Malala, along with former Sports CS Rashid Echesa and the area MP, had been arrested on Friday afternoon in connection with the murderous gangs terrorizing residents of Matungu area in Kakamega county.

These gangs had claimed close to 30 lives in the past month alone.
