On August 8, 2019, a woman's life was forever changed when she went into labor while on her way to work in Nairobi.
Thanks to the quick thinking and kindness of a stranger, the woman was able to deliver her baby boy safely in the back of a taxi.
Everlyne Atieno, a Nation Media Group employee, was leaving work around 5pm when she heard a woman scream in a car outside Nation Centre.
‘I watched from a distance, I thought there were some robbers trying to attack passengers inside a taxi,’ she said.
However, this was not the case. The driver of the taxi jumped out, running and screaming for help, shouting ‘A woman is about to deliver, kindly help’.
Ms Atieno rushed to the car and found the woman, who looked strong and was pushing out the baby.
She immediately dropped her bags and took her lesso, which she used to cover the woman and assisted her to deliver the baby.
‘I held the baby, it had already fallen in the car seat. I covered it, I also helped the woman in the other processes before the doctor and the nurses arrived,’ said Ms Atieno.
The woman, who is an employee at a microfinance company in town, delivered a baby boy.
Ms Atieno said this was the first time she had experienced such an incident, but being a mother, she had to help.
Shortly, other women came in to cover the vehicle to ensure there was privacy for the woman.
