On July 31, 2019, the body of Suzan Makena, a 22-year-old Kenyan woman, was found in the sea in Dubai, coincidentally on her birthday.
Makena had left Kenya five months prior to work in a Dubai hotel, but her family and friends in Kenya were left in the dark about her death until her roommates informed them after the police confirmed her identity.
According to a close family member, Makena had gone out to meet someone at 3am on the day of her death, but her phone went off later, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
The Dubai police have released postmortem results stating that Makena slipped and drowned, but her family and friends in Kenya are still seeking answers.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to collect Sh500,000 to bring Makena's remains back home, with friends and family members using the hashtag #bringbackMakena.
