On August 7, 2019, Nairobi governor Mike Sonko issued a cheque to help offset the hospital bill of Esther Wambui, a cancer victim who had passed away after being turned away from the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) due to lack of funds.
Wambui's family had been left with an outstanding hospital bill of Sh300,000, excluding mortuary fees, after her death.
However, the cheque issued by Governor Sonko had an error - the amount in words differed from the amount in figures.
According to a tweet by GiDi, the cheque would not be cleared by the bank due to the discrepancy.
But the governor's Director of Communication, Richard Bosire, clarified that the error had been rectified, and the correct amount was Sh200,000.
He explained that the error was corrected at the back of the cheque, which initially read Sh210,000.
