Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been cracking down on property owners in the city's central business district, ordering them to repaint their buildings every two years. In a recent directive, Sonko gave property owners a two-week ultimatum to repaint their premises or face legal action.
According to Sonko, the order is in line with the Public Health Cap 2 42 and County by-laws, which require property owners to repaint their buildings every two years. He also gave them blanket approval to improve all their frontages with legitimate concrete blocks.
On Wednesday, Sonko took to his popular Facebook page to share photos of some of the buildings that have received a fresh paint job. He expressed his satisfaction with the response from some property owners, saying, "Last month, we ordered all property owners within the CBD to have their buildings repainted as per the Public Health Cap 2 42 and County by-laws that requires them to do so after every two years. We also gave them blanket approval to improve all their frontages with legitimate concrete blocks. Today, I am happy to see some owners taking the order seriously by repainting their buildings," he posted.
However, Sonko warned that property owners who will not have complied before the deadline will have their buildings closed. He said, "Once the 21-day notice lapses, all property owners who will not have complied will have their buildings shut down and rendered inaccessible. My desire is to see the town clean and we must have smart buildings," he added.
He also specifically mentioned buildings near Haile Sellasie, OTC, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, and Wakulima market that need to be repainted.
