On Tuesday afternoon, Police Constable Abel Musati of the Kamukunji Police Station fired his AK-47 rifle at Police Constable Hillary Korir of the Traffic division along General Warunge Road in Nairobi.
PC Korir had arrested the driver of a Toyota Hiace, Reg. No KAU 282M, for driving without a TLB license. The driver claimed the vehicle belonged to its owner, prompting PC Musati to intervene.
According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander Phillip Ndolo, PC Musati 'forcefully pulled the traffic officer out of the vehicle and ordered the driver to drive off.' PC Korir requested that the matter be sorted out at the police station, but PC Musati 'aggressively followed Korir and fired one round of 7.62mm special ammunition at him, but the bullet missed the officer.'
PC Musati is facing charges of attempted murder, firing at a traffic police officer on duty, aiding the escape of a suspect, and permitting a motor vehicle to be driven without a TLB license.
At the time of writing, detectives were still pursuing the vehicle and its driver.
