On August 24, 2019, the day of the national population census, residents of Kirinyaga County were advised to stay at home and await enumerators who would be counting people from house to house.
County Commissioner Jim Njoka issued the directive, ordering all bars in the county to close by 6 pm on August 24 to enable residents to participate in the census.
Mr. Njoka instructed chiefs and the police to implement the directive, ensuring that no one was locked out when the exercise began.
He also urged bar owners to cooperate with the directive, assuring the enumerators of their security and asking them not to fear when working at night.
Security would be beefed up in urban and rural areas to prevent interference with the census, the commissioner said.
Additionally, census officials who accompanied security agents were required to wear identification badges when entering people's homes.
Residents were advised to be cautious and not allow anyone who failed to identify themselves into their homes during the census.
