On August 6, 2019, John Njiraini, the former Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority, withdrew his candidature for the Chairperson position of the National Land Commission.

According to a letter to the Selection of the Chairperson and Members of the National Land Commission Public Service Building, Njiraini cited personal reasons for his decision to opt out.

He expressed his gratitude to the selection committee for the opportunity and acknowledged the importance of the National Land Commission.

John Njiraini was among 11 candidates shortlisted for the position, following the exit of Muhammad Swazuri. The selection process for the Chairperson and members of the National Land Commission is ongoing.
