On August 7, 2019, the Migori County Assembly made a significant decision, rejecting a list of six nominees for the county public service board. The nominees, put forward by Governor Okoth Obado, were to take over from the Peterlis Nyatuga-led board whose term expired on July 25 after serving a six-year term.
The rejected nominees included Jared Kopiyo, a former Awendo Member of Parliament, who was nominated as the Chairperson of the board. The other nominees were Kennedy Ochieng Makasembo, Omwa Hesbon Otieno, Jemima Adhiambo Were, Enock Odhiambo Ochieng, and Mwita Range Maroa.
According to Christopher Onanda, Chair of the Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, the county assembly members insisted on regional balance and diversity in profession. They noted that five out of the six nominees were teachers by profession, and therefore, wanted people from other professional backgrounds to be included in the board.
As a result, Governor Obado will now have to make fresh nominations and forward the names for vetting by the county assembly.
