On July 26, a breakthrough was reached in the DR Congo's government formation process, with the signing of an agreement between the pro-opposition coalition Course for Change (Cach) and the Common Front for Congo (FCC), led by former President Joseph Kabila.
The agreement allocated 42 ministerial positions to the FCC and 23 to Cach, paving the way for Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba to launch formal consultations with the two blocs.
Ilunga's office announced that he had begun 'formal consultations' with Cach and FCC, with the aim of forming a cabinet in the vast country.
According to the prime minister's office, Ilunga had given delegates a document outlining the criteria for ministerial appointments, which included a mix of 'former and current (political) figures and those from the emerging generation.'
Individuals with 'judicial convictions in the DRC or elsewhere' would be excluded from consideration, and priority would be given to those with 'competence, integrity, and the ability to work in a team.'
The two blocs have until August 10 to put forward candidates for the 65 ministerial positions, which will then be submitted to President Felix Tshisekedi for his decision.
