On August 7, 2019, a rescue team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) successfully evacuated a group of four who had been lost in Mt Kenya National Park for six days.
The group, consisting of a tourist, a guide, and two porters, had scaled Mount Kenya to point Lenana, which is 10,000 feet above sea level, but lost their way while descending.
According to KWS, the group took an unauthorized route through the Kamweti area, which led them to encounter a herd of elephants. The sight of the elephants caused the group to panic and lose their trail.
Fortunately, one of the group members was able to call for assistance from a KWS ranger, who promptly alerted the rescue team.
A KWS mountain rescue team was dispatched to the scene and used a helicopter to rescue the group on August 6, 2019.
During their ordeal, one of the porters fell victim to mountain sickness and was unable to walk without assistance. However, he is now responding well to medication.
