On August 7, 2019, Watford FC announced the signing of former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on a free transfer.

Welbeck, 28 at the time, had been without a club following his release from Arsenal at the end of the previous season. His Arsenal career was cut short in November when he broke his ankle while playing for the Gunners.

"We're delighted to confirm the signing of England international Danny Welbeck on a free transfer," Watford stated in a press release.

Welbeck, who has won 42 caps for England, has seen his career impacted by injuries, but he was fit again for the start of the new season. During his time in the Premier League, he scored 42 goals in 206 appearances for Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sunderland.
