With the 12th edition of the African Games set to take place in Morocco from August 19-31, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) has emphasized the importance of transparency in team selection.
According to a statement released by NOCK, the committee encourages sports federations to conduct a competitive and transparent selection process for international assignments, including the upcoming African Games.
NOCK's call for transparency comes after the Sports Disputes Tribunal made a ruling on August 6, 2019, quashing the badminton squad for the Games and ordering a fresh team to be selected in accordance with the selection policy.
The ruling was made in favor of claimants, including badminton players Sheila Gakii, Edwin Waitathu, and Loice Andia, who had accused Badminton Kenya of selecting a team that did not meet the requirements set out in the selection policy.
With less than two weeks to go before the Games kick off, NOCK has revealed that they will provide kits for the teams, while the entire management of the Games is under the Kenya National Sports Council.
Kenya will be sending a contingent of 290 athletes to participate in 22 disciplines in the Games, which will be held in four Moroccan cities – Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida, and Khemisset.
