Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios' recent improvement in behavior and performance was short-lived, as he was ejected from the Rogers Cup in Montreal after a heated argument with the umpire over a white towel.
On Tuesday, Kyrgios, who had been playing some of the best tennis of his life, including a recent win at the Citi Open in Washington, was defeated by Britain's Kyle Edmund in the opening round of the Rogers Cup.
The match was marked by a series of heated exchanges between Kyrgios and the umpire, who had denied his request for a white towel. Kyrgios was eventually given a code violation for an obscenity and was forced to leave the court.
"I'm not allowed to leave the chair," the umpire said, to which Kyrgios replied, "You're telling me that you can't radio in just for one white towel?"
Despite the controversy, Edmund went on to win the match 6-3 6-4, advancing to the second round where he will face eighth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Meanwhile, other notable players, including John Isner, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Alexander Zverev, also advanced to the second round.
