On Wednesday, August 7, 2019, Steve Polack, a seasoned English coach, arrived in Nairobi to take charge of Gor Mahia, the Kenyan football champions.
Polack's appointment comes after Hassan Oktay, the previous coach, resigned citing personal problems in his native Europe.
According to sources, Polack will sign a two-year contract with Gor Mahia before departing with the team to Bujumbura, Burundi, on Friday, August 9, 2019, to prepare for the 2019/2020 Caf Champions League first leg clash against Aigle Noir Makamba FC.
The match is set to take place at the 10,000-seater Intwari stadium in Bujumbura on Sunday, August 11, 2019.
Polack's experience in African football management makes him an ideal candidate for the job, according to Gor Chief Executive Lordvick Aduda.
"It is important to have someone who has African football management experience," Aduda explained.
Polack has a rich coaching experience, having coached several clubs including KPV and Viking in Finland, and has also played professionally as a defender for top-flight clubs in Finland.
However, his coaching career has not been without its challenges, including a road accident in 2017 that left one member of the technical bench dead and several others injured.
