Former Mount Kenya United FC head coach Melis Medo's financial struggles in Kenya have come to a head, with the American coach being evicted from his rental apartment in Nairobi due to unpaid rent.
According to Goal.com, Medo received two cheques from club owner Francis Mureithi, but they bounced when deposited at the bank, leaving him in a tight spot.
Medo recounted the difficulties he faced, saying, 'It has not been easy staying in Kenya. Nobody from the club cared for me. The owner played a hide and seek game on me, even the cheques he gave me bounced. I had to part with my expensive watch to get at least two more months where I am staying with my son.'
Medo also revealed that he had to call Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa for assistance, who sent him KES 15,000, which helped him temporarily.
However, the landlord eventually evicted Medo and his son from the apartment, and the coach has since returned to the United States.
Medo's eviction serves as a stark reminder of the financial challenges faced by Mount Kenya United FC, which was acquired by a group of central Kenya businessmen and rebranded from Nakumatt to Mount Kenya.
The team's struggles were exemplified by their relegation to the bottom of the 2018/2019 Kenyan Premier League, following a season marked by player strikes due to cash flow challenges.
