Published on August 7, 2019, a partnership between the County Government of Mombasa and Safaricom Foundation has been announced to renovate and equip the newborn unit at Coast General Hospital.
The partnership, which was announced at a forum in Mombasa, will see Safaricom Foundation contribute KES 10 million towards the renovation, while Mombasa County will provide KES 9 million for equipping the unit.
The newborn unit renovation is part of Safaricom Foundation's Maternal and Child Health programme, which aims to promote maternal, newborn, and child health services across the country.
Under this programme, the foundation has set aside KES 132 million for three years to support various projects in the Coast region.
According to Sanda Ojiambo, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Safaricom, the foundation's goal is to advocate for access to maternal, neonatal, and child health services, improve health financing, and leverage technology to enhance efficiency.
Coast region has one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in the country, with 25 deaths per 1,000 live births, as per the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2014.
