On August 7, 1998, a bomb blast in Nairobi's US Embassy killed over 200 people and left thousands injured. Twenty-one years later, survivors and families of the victims are gathering at the Memorial Park to commemorate the anniversary.
The attack, which also targeted the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, was claimed by Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Despite the devastating effects of the attack, the relationship between the US and Kenya remains strong, according to Ambassador Martin Kimani, Director of Kenya's National Counter Terrorism Centre.
“Twenty years later, Kenyans are proud to be fighting against terrorism alongside our allies and friends for the safety of our families, our communities and our country,” Amb. Kimani said during the 20th anniversary last year.
A short documentary was featured at the memorial to showcase the journey of survivors towards recovery. The documentary included victims' narrations of the events of the fateful day and how it changed their lives forever.
