On August 7, 2019, the 10th Annual Education and Leadership Congress kicked off at Kenyatta University, where Equity Group Foundation was hosting form 1 and 2 Wings to Fly scholars. The congress, themed 'Integrity; an anchor to academic excellence,' aimed to equip participants with vital life skills to shape them into responsible citizens.
During the weeklong initiative, business and academic leaders from both private and public sectors mentored the scholars, including Professor Paul Wainaina, Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, and Ms Patrizia DiGiovanni, Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF.
Ambassador Annette Günther encouraged the scholars to make the most of the opportunity to excel in life, saying, 'Make the most of the opportunity that you have to excel in life.'
Earlier, a group of German parliamentarians paid a courtesy visit to a Wings to Fly beneficiary, Jalddin Mohamed Issack, at Korogocho Informal Settlement. The delegation, part of the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Research, and Technology, was in Kenya to visit German Government-funded projects, including the Wings to Fly program.
The German Government, through KfW, has supported some of the scholars through high school, providing for their tuition, uniform, books, shopping, and pocket money for four years.
Dr. Stefan Kaufmann, leader of the German delegation, congratulated the Wings to Fly scholars and wished them the best in their academics and in supporting their families. 'Equity Group Foundation is running a good program. We are very impressed to see the bright people who will secure the future of Kenya,' he said.
