Kenya Commemorates 21 Years Since US Embassy Bombing ¶
Kenya is commemorating 21 years since the US embassy bombing on August 7, 1998, in Nairobi. Magazines in Kenya on August 7 reported on proposals to recognize and compensate families of the victims.
On the same day, August 7, 14 party leaders from Burkina Faso were in Kenya for a familiarization tour to learn how to lead their parties, prepare for a referendum, and conduct elections.
Kenya and Burkina Faso will both hold presidential elections in 2022.
On Tuesday, August 6, the party leaders visited the Secretary General of the KANU party, Nick Salat. They wanted to know how the party had managed to survive and how they were preparing for the upcoming general election.
The party leaders also visited the ODM, Narc-Kenya, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
On Wednesday, August 7, the party leaders will meet with the Registrar of Political Parties in Kenya.
Notorious Gang 'Wakali Kwanza' Targets Bamburi Residents ¶
A notorious gang known as 'Wakali Kwanza' attacked residents of Bamburi on Monday, August 5, starting as a soccer club. The players were between 12 and 20 years old.
According to the magazine, the gang was formed in 2014 and initially attracted talented young players in the area but later turned to a gang that carried out criminal activities.
The attack on Monday left 15 people seriously injured.
Other notorious gangs that have been terrorizing residents of the coastal region include Wakali Wao, Wajukuu wa Bibi, Mawayo, Spiders, Gaza, Spanish Spatter, Vietnam, Akili za Usiku, and Crazy Boys.
Family of Ikolomani MP Still Mourning Son's Death ¶
The family of Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali is still mourning the death of his son, Chris Atema Masaka, who died in a swimming accident in Arizona, USA, on July 26.
The body of the late Masaka is expected to arrive in Kenya on Wednesday, August 7, and will be buried on Saturday, August 10, in Irembe village, Kakemega County.
Waititu's Kaa Soba Campaign Faces More Trouble ¶
The Kaa Soba campaign by Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu may face more trouble as the government launches an investigation into the campaign.
The campaign was launched in February 2018 but was suspended due to controversy surrounding it.
Chief Internal Auditor Edward Ouko had earlier raised concerns about the campaign's irregularities, including the payment of KSh 400 per day to those involved in the campaign.
The governor was also accused of failing to keep records of those who were affected by the campaign.
Ouko also noted that the payments made to those involved in the campaign were not properly recorded, making it difficult to prove that they were paid.
Opposition Leader Raila Odinga Slams MPs' US Trip ¶
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has slammed the trip by some MPs to the US, saying it is a waste of public resources.
Kenya has sent 85 representatives, including MPs, senators, and other officials, to the US at a cost of KSh 100 million.
The trip includes travel, entertainment, and accommodation costs.
Kenya is the only country that has sent a large delegation to the US, followed by Nigeria, which will be represented by 20 MPs, and other countries with six MPs each.
