Machakos Governor Defies Critics ¶
Alfred Mutua, the Governor of Machakos County, has responded to calls for an investigation into his alleged misuse of public funds. Speaking at a meeting with the business community at Kenyatta Stadium on August 6, 2019, Mutua stated that he is ready to be arrested if found guilty of misappropriating public funds.
He claimed that he earns an honest living through his investments in the aviation and real estate industries. Mutua also revealed that he started his own company at the age of 19 and has since invested in various ventures, including buying apartments in Nairobi and planes for a local aviation company.
His comments came after Machakos Senator Boniface Kabaka called for an investigation into Mutua's alleged misappropriation of KSh 89 million meant for the de-silting of Marumba dam and KSh 50 million given by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). Kabaka accused Mutua of violating the Constitution and other laws in discharging his duties.
Despite the allegations, Mutua remains defiant, stating that he is too rich to steal public money. He also accused his critics of being 'thick' and claimed that he bought vehicles at a low price to purchase ambulances.
Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has been at the forefront of calling for investigations into Mutua's alleged misappropriation of public funds.
