On August 8, 2017, Chris Karan won the Ugenya parliamentary seat with 23,765 votes under the ODM ticket, defeating David Ochieng, who garnered 23,048 votes under the Movement for Democracy and Growth ticket.
However, David Ochieng filed a petition to nullify Karan's win, citing irregularities. Karan responded to the petition with a forged medical certificate, claiming he was admitted to Alfarooq Hospital in Mombasa due to vomiting and fever.
But the hospital refuted the claims, stating that it has a computerized patient registration system and no records of Karan's name. The lawyer representing Ochieng revealed that he had written to the hospital, which denied Karan's admission.
As a result, Karan's response to the petition was deemed invalid, and he was expelled from the case. The case has been rescheduled and is set to resume on December 4, 2019.
