The Kenya women's national basketball team is on the verge of missing the 2019 FIBA Afrobasket championships in Senegal due to the Ministry of Sports' silence on providing air tickets, accommodation, and allowances.
According to Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) treasurer Peter Orero, the team was set to leave for Dakar, Senegal, on June 9, 2019, but the government's delay in responding to their needs has put their participation in jeopardy.
Kenya returns to the continental scene after a five-year absence, having last featured in the 2013 FIBA Afrobasket championships in Maputo, Mozambique. The team was eager to emulate their men's counterparts, the Kenya Morans, who finished second behind the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Bamako, Mali.
Orero expressed the team's disappointment, stating that they felt neglected after learning of their current situation. 'They have been in high spirits since they resumed training camp about a month ago, but after they learned of their current situation, they feel neglected because they were eager to give their all and make Kenya proud just like the men's team,' Orero said.
The team is training at the Nyayo Gymnasium in Nairobi, and they have a friendly match against the men's side on June 8, 2019. Kenya will battle 12 other nations for continental glory in the 2019 FIBA Afrobasket championships, which begin on June 9, 2019.
