On August 7, 2019, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) launched an investigation into a Sh8.4 million foreign trip scandal involving 42 members of Siaya County Assembly (MCAs).
The MCAs are accused of receiving Sh200,000 each from the county assembly coffers for a trip to Uganda that never took place.
According to EACC, the MCAs were summoned to record statements after a complaint was lodged by the Siaya County Accountability Network (SCAN), a lobby group.
SCAN claimed that the MCAs took their passports for stamping at the Busia border in order to receive the payment, but never went on the trip.
EACC has also requested Siaya County Assembly to provide documents related to the advance payment for the alleged non-existent trip and other corruption claims.
Ignatius Wekesa, EACC Western region director, stated that each of the 42 MCAs will be questioned starting from August 12th.
