On August 4, 2019, Narok Governor Samuel Tunai announced plans to unveil a municipality board for Narok county, a crucial step towards changing the county headquarters' status.
According to Governor Tunai, the appointment of the board will be a major step towards making the town a municipality, a key milestone in the quest for city status. He expressed gratitude to the county assembly members for overwhelmingly approving the municipality charter.
However, not everyone is in support of the plan. Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta has expressed reservations, citing concerns that the town's expansion might encroach on community lands without the owners' consent.
Mr. Kenta has threatened to take the matter to court, seeking to compel the county assembly to recall the municipality charter and only approve it after sufficient public participation is conducted.
Despite the opposition, Governor Tunai remains resolute, stating that there is no turning back on the city status plan, which he claims is widely supported.
