Gor Mahia head coach Hassan Oktay has officially resigned from his position, effective August 6, 2019. The 46-year-old Turkish-Cypriot coach had initially requested a six-day leave to attend to family issues in Turkey.
According to the club's statement, Oktay has requested to be released from his contract, which was set to expire in late 2019. The club has accepted his resignation and thanked him for his services.
Oktay took over as Gor Mahia head coach in December 2018, succeeding Dylan Kerr. During his tenure, the team won their 18th Kenyan Premier League title under his leadership.
However, Oktay's resignation comes at a challenging time for the team, which has also lost key players to other clubs. Attacking midfielder Francis Kahata joined Simba SC, striker Jacques Tuyisenge left for Petro Atletico, and their then captain Harun Shakava recently left for Zambian side Nkana FC.
Assistant coach Zedekiah Otieno has also left the club to join KCB as their head coach. The team is now facing a significant blow with Oktay's departure, which may impact their performance in the upcoming matches.
