Derby County has confirmed the signing of former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney as a player-coach, with the 33-year-old set to join the team in January.
Rooney, who has been playing for DC United in the MLS, will complete the current season before linking up with Phillip Cocu and the Derby County team.
He has signed an 18-month contract, which includes the option of an additional year, and will take on both playing and coaching roles at the club.
Rooney expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying, "I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with. I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff and the first-team squad from the start of January. I am sure I can make a big contribution and can’t wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters."
He also thanked DC United and their supporters, saying, "I must also take this opportunity to thank DC United, their owners, executives and supporters who have been superb to work with. I want them to know that I will give my all in support of our push for the play-offs."
Derby County faced competition from Burnley and West Brom for the signing, but ultimately secured Rooney's services.
Rooney's move to Derby County is seen as a significant boost for the team, with Phillip Cocu saying, "Wayne Rooney is an extremely talented and top-class footballer. It is an exciting prospect for him to be joining Derby County and he can bring so much to this squad, both on and off the pitch."
Rooney has been in spectacular form since joining DC United, netting 25 goals in 45 games, and has a wealth of experience playing for Manchester United and England, where he is the all-time leading scorer.
