On August 6, 2019, the National Assembly Committee on Implementation of House Resolutions issued a stern warning to London Distillers (Kenya) Limited to cease toxic emissions and waste discharge into Athi River within six weeks or face plant shutdown.
The committee, chaired by Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta, directed Environment Principal Secretary Ibrahim Mohammed and the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) to submit a final report on LDK's compliance within the stipulated timeframe.
LDK, a manufacturer of alcoholic drinks including Meakins, Napoleon, Kenya King, and Safari brands, has been accused by Erdemann Property Limited of polluting the environment through toxic emissions and dumping of raw waste into Athi River.
LDK's alleged environmental transgressions date back to 2018, when Erdemann petitioned Parliament to investigate the company's activities.
Moitalel ole Kenta expressed disappointment with Nema's handling of the matter, questioning the authority's competency in addressing environmental concerns.
The committee threatened to recommend the removal from office and prosecution of Nema officials who have failed to hold polluters accountable.
