On Tuesday, police in Narok County arrested a man in possession of fake new generation 1000-shilling notes worth Ksh. 30,000, published on August 6, 2019.
The suspect attempted to trick an M-Pesa agent at Oldanyati location into depositing the fake notes into his account.
Area Chief Philip Kortom confirmed the incident, stating that the M-Pesa agent raised an alarm after realizing the notes were fake, leading to the suspect's arrest by nearby traders.
The suspect was taken to Enosaen Police Station and detained pending arraignment.
Recent cases of fake new currency notes have been on the rise, including a reported incident in Eldoret where police arrested two people with over Ksh. 150 million in fake notes.
Similar incidents have occurred in Embu and Nairobi, where suspects were arrested with fake currency notes worth Ksh. 100,000 and over Ksh. 1 billion, respectively.
