Former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie made a stunning revelation about his time at Old Trafford, stating that Sir Alex Ferguson broke a promise to him after he joined the club in 2012.
According to van Persie, Ferguson had assured him that he would stay at the helm of affairs for three more seasons before quitting, which was a major factor in his decision to leave Arsenal for Manchester United.
However, Ferguson went on to quit after just a season of van Persie joining the Red Devils from Arsenal, leaving the Dutchman devastated.
Van Persie, who won the Premier League title in his debut season for Manchester United, revealed that he understood Ferguson's decision to change his mind and put family first.
He further stated that Ferguson was the reason he sealed the sensational switch to Old Trafford, and that the legendary manager was one of the big reasons why he signed with Manchester United.
Despite his electric start to life at United, van Persie endured difficult spells after Ferguson's exit, before leaving unceremoniously for Fenerbahçe in 2015.
Van Persie made these revelations in an interview with Planet Football, where he also spoke about his time at Manchester United and the impact of Ferguson's departure on the team.
