On Tuesday, Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai shared an update on the ongoing efforts to rescue two Cuban doctors kidnapped in Mandera County four months ago.
The doctors, Assel Herera Corea and Landy Rodriguez, were abducted in April by suspected Al-Shabaab members who demanded a ransom of Sh150 million.
According to community elders who visited a remote village in Jubbaland, Somalia, the kidnappers later moved the doctors to Halaanqo forest near Barawe town, where they allegedly converted them to Islam.
Mr. Mutyambai acknowledged the challenges in the rescue mission, citing the lack of mandate to cross the border. However, he noted that some suspects were in police custody and were assisting with investigations.
During his familiarisation tour in Mandera, the IG visited Lafey, Elwak, Rhamu, and Takaba to boost police morale.
He also commended security agencies at the coast for dealing with organised criminal gangs in Mombasa and other areas, including the Wakali Wao gang.
Mr. Mutyambai expressed confidence that all members of the Wakali Wao gang would be arrested by the end of the week, citing the cooperation of three suspects who were providing information.
