On a visit to Mandera County, the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai revealed that arrests have been made in connection with the abduction of two Cuban doctors stationed in Mandera by suspected Al-Shabaab militia in April 2019.
Despite facing challenges in carrying out operations beyond the border, police are still pursuing crucial leads on the whereabouts of the abducted doctors, Landy Rodriguez, a surgeon, and Herera Correa, a general practitioner, who were stationed at the Mandera Referral hospital.
During the daring road ambush, the gunmen shot and killed one of the police officers guarding the medics who were being escorted to work.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary had ruled out negotiations with Al-Shabaab over the abduction of the two Cuban doctors in May 2019.
The government remains committed to rescuing the medics and bringing them back to the country, despite the setbacks faced by the police force.
