Published on August 6, 2019, Martha Karua's Supreme Court defeat has left her with a long and winding road ahead. The former presidential candidate expressed her dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court's verdict upholding Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi Kamotho's victory in the 2017 poll.
According to Karua, the court failed to consider the evidence presented by her legal team, instead dismissing her case on a technicality. She took to Twitter to express her disappointment, stating, “I did not get justice at the court but Aluta continua. The journey to success is long and winding.”
Despite her loss, Karua maintained that she had a solid case and that any assertion that she lost due to lacking merit would be misleading and inaccurate. She praised her defence team, led by lawyer Gitobu Imanyara, for their professionalism and zeal in representing her in court.
On the other hand, Governor Anne Mumbi Kamotho hailed the verdict, stating that her victory was free and fair. She accused some individuals of undermining her leadership, instead of sticking to their roles.
The Supreme Court ruling upheld the Appellate Court's decision, citing that the proceedings before the High Court were null due to the lapse of the 60-day period for the appeal to be concluded. The court directed that each party should bear the costs of the proceedings at the High Court, Appellate Court, and the Supreme Court.
