On August 6, 2019, the Supreme Court of Kenya delivered a ruling that upheld the election of Anne Waiguru as Kirinyaga Governor, dismissing a petition filed by Martha Karua of the Narc-Kenya Party.
The court, led by Justice Isaac Lenaola, found that Karua failed to provide sufficient evidence to support her claims of bribery in the 2017 Kirinyaga gubernatorial election.
As a result, the court directed that each party bear the costs of the proceedings at the High Court, Appeals Court, and Supreme Court.
Karua had initially filed a petition at the Kerugoya High Court, which was dismissed due to lack of merit, with the court ordering her to pay costs amounting to Sh5 million.
Waiguru was declared the winner of the Kirinyaga Governor's contest with 153,353 votes (53 percent), ahead of Karua who garnered 116,626 votes (41 percent) and incumbent Governor Joseph Ndathi who received 4,496 votes.
