On August 6, 2019, a hospital in Leicester, England, made a grave mistake that would change the life of a 70-year-old man forever.
Terry Brazier had gone to Leicester Royal Infirmary for a routine bladder procedure called a cystoscopy. However, due to a mix-up, he was mistakenly circumcised instead.
The hospital apologized and conducted a thorough investigation into the incident. After a lengthy process, they confirmed that Brazier had been awarded a $24,000 (approximately Ksh.2.4 million) payout as compensation for the mistake.
According to Brazier, he was so engrossed in conversation with hospital staff that he didn't notice the mistake until it was too late. 'They didn't know what to say when they found out they'd done it, they said they can't send me back to the ward and they needed to talk to me,' he recalled in an interview with the Daily Star.
Andrew Furlong, medical director at University Hospitals of Leicester, expressed his deep regret over the incident, stating, 'We remain deeply and genuinely sorry that this mistake occurred, and I would like to take this opportunity to once again apologise to Mr Brazier.'
