On August 6, 2019, Gor Mahia, the 18-time Kenyan Premier League champions, announced the departure of their title-winning coach Hassan Oktay.
Earlier, Oktay had requested a few days' leave to attend to personal problems, and the club had granted him a break through a social media post.
However, in a letter to Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier, Oktay asked to be relieved of his duties, citing personal challenges he was facing in Europe.
"Kindly accept my resignation as Gor Mahia FC head coach effective today, the sixth day of August 2019," Oktay wrote in his letter. "As you are aware, the decision has been forced on me by the personal challenges I am facing here in Europe. I wish to thank you and the entire club, including the fans for the opportunity you accorded me to manage this great club. I also wish you guys all the best in your forthcoming assignments," he added.
Oktay joined Gor Mahia as a replacement for Dylan Kerr and went on to win a record 18th Kenyan Premier League title with the side. He has only stayed at Gor for a season.
Club legend Dennis Oliech is likely to take over as caretaker manager while Gor Mahia strives to find a replacement for Oktay.
