On August 6, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta's state visit to Jamaica made headlines on social media due to a peculiar statement he made about his family's connection to the Caribbean island.
During his visit, Uhuru stated that 'I can confirm given the fact that my wife's brother's mother comes from Jamaica and lived all her life in Kenya.' The statement caused confusion and amusement among social media users, with many questioning why the president couldn't simply say that his mother-in-law has roots in Jamaica.
The conversation about legalizing bhang in Kenya has been trending on social media for some time, and Uhuru's statement was seen as an endorsement of the idea. Mike Mbuvi Sonko and other ODM leaders had previously sparked the conversation at Ken Okoth's funeral.
However, it appears that Uhuru's statement was misinterpreted. His brother Muhoho Kenyatta's wife's mother is actually the link between the First Family and Jamaica.
