Wayne Rooney Returns to England as Derby County Coach-Player ¶
On August 6, 2019, former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney made a sensational return to England as he joined Championship side Derby County as a coach-player.
Rooney, who signed an 18-month deal, will take charge of the team from January 2020, replacing Frank Lampard who is now Chelsea's manager.
Derby County had reached the play-offs finals in the previous season but were denied promotion by Aston Villa.
Rooney, who has been in spectacular form since moving to MLS side DC United from Everton last summer, has expressed his excitement about the opportunity to join Derby County.
"I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with," Rooney said. "I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff and the first-team squad from the start of January. I am sure I can make a big contribution and can’t wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters."
Rooney will also be involved in coaching the first team and Academy at Derby County.
He thanked DC United, their owners, executives, and supporters for their support during his time with the team.
