Workers in Kenya's 47 counties are facing a salary crisis, with many yet to receive their July paychecks.
County government workers have given the government a seven-day notice to pay their delayed salaries, warning that they will take to the streets if their demands are not met.
According to Roba Duba, secretary general of the Kenya County Government Workers Union, the government has been slow to respond to their salary obligations.
‘‘We are giving the government until next week Tuesday to pay us our salaries failure to which we shall mobilize all workers in the 47 counties and do salary parade because our salaries are fundamental, it is in the contract and therefore it is not negotiable.’’
Other unions, including the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union, have echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Council of Governors of dragging workers into the division revenue bill wars.
Only Governor Mike Sonko of Nairobi has promised to pay workers this week, citing a lack of funds and a wait for the passage of the division of revenue bill.
