Machakos County is making significant strides in healthcare with the upcoming launch of its first cancer facility. The facility, which is set to open this month, will offer free services to residents under the Universal Health Coverage program sponsored by the World Bank and the Government of Kenya.

According to Governor Alfred Mutua, the county government has already received equipment from abroad, which is currently being installed. The Machakos cancer center and research facility will be up and running in two weeks' time, as revealed by Governor Mutua during a forum with the business community at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos town.

The county government has selected Machakos as one of the four counties for the rollout of the Universal Health Care program. As part of this initiative, Governor Mutua has announced plans to shut down factories in Athi River that are polluting the environment. The move aims to address the rampant cancer cases among Athi River residents, who are consuming water contaminated with harmful chemicals.
