On October 22, 2014, WhatsApp unveiled its web version, marking a significant step towards reaching users across various platforms.
The web client, initially available for Chrome web browsers, allows users to access their WhatsApp messages on their computers, extending the service from their mobile devices.
However, due to limitations with the Apple platform, iOS users were initially excluded from accessing the web service.
For a seamless experience, users were required to scan a QR code on their mobile device, which paired the browser with their phone, reflecting their WhatsApp messages directly on their desktop.
At the time of its launch, WhatsApp had reached 700 million active users, with over 30 billion messages sent daily.
The web version was expected to increase user engagement, particularly for those who preferred larger screens for sharing and watching videos, pictures, and listening to music.
By launching a web version, WhatsApp aimed to compete with other messaging services, such as Viber, Line, Skype, and Hangouts, which already had desktop versions.
