Published on August 6, 2019, a humanitarian crisis in South Sudan has left 28,000 people facing severe starvation in Aweil State.
According to Aweil State Minister of Agriculture John Amar Akook, those in rural areas are most at risk due to the food gap caused by seasonal rains that led to flooding, affecting people living in lowlands who were unable to cultivate their farms.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification also reported that 275,000 people have been facing a food crisis between May and July in the same area.
South Sudan's humanitarian crisis deteriorated after the outbreak of war in 2013 between the factions of President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, with the UN rating it as one of the worst in the world.
