On August 6, 2019, Kirinyaga county assembly speaker Davis Wachira resigned amidst a shake-up in the assembly.

According to reports, Wachira panicked following recent changes in the assembly, which saw all committee chairmen removed.

The changes included the removal of Davis Mathenge, chair of the budget committee, and Elisha Mwangi, chair of the gender committee, both of whom were staunch supporters of Governor Anne Waiguru.

The MCAs had fallen out of favor with the governor after accompanying health workers to the county headquarters during a strike three weeks prior.

Wachira's resignation letter, copied to the clerk of the assembly, Governor Anne Waiguru, and James Murango, the leader of the majority in the assembly, cited personal reasons.

The assembly has commenced the process of appointing a new speaker to ensure smooth transition and house business.

Notably, the recent changes in the assembly have seen nominated members take the lead in various committees, including the development committee, education committee, and finance and economic planning committee.
