Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has been hospitalized in Singapore for four months, according to his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa.
On August 6, 2019, President Mnangagwa released a statement saying that Mugabe, 95, was receiving medical attention and responding well to treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
According to Mnangagwa, Mugabe's physicians had determined that he needed to be kept under observation for a longer period than usual, starting from April 2019 when he left for his latest routine check-up.
"I am greatly pleased to inform the nation that the former president continues to make steady progress towards eventual recovery and that his condition is remarkably stable for his age," Mnangagwa added.
A delegation sent to Singapore to check up on Mugabe reported that he was "responding well to treatment" and that "because of the good progress he is making Mugabe could be released fairly soon."
Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades since independence from Britain in 1980, was forced to resign in November 2017 after an army coup.
