On August 5, 2019, the Council of Governors' Twitter account inadvertently retweeted a provocative message from Vlogger Taruri Gatere, sparking a social media backlash.

The tweet, which was part of a conversation between Gatere and a Jamaican user named Kimone Pitterson, contained explicit language and suggestions.

Although the Council of Governors quickly regained control of its Twitter handle, the damage had already been done, and the incident sparked widespread criticism.

‘SINCEREST APOLOGIES: We sincerely apologize for the inappropriate retweet through our Twitter handle. We have regained control of our handle and have put proper measures to ensure that this does not occur again,’” the Council stated in a subsequent apology tweet.
