On August 5, 2019, a devastating car explosion rocked central Cairo, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.
A speeding car packed with explosives collided with three other vehicles just before midnight, causing a massive blast outside the National Cancer Institute.
The blast resulted in the loss of 20 lives, with four of the victims remaining unidentified. A total of 47 people were injured, with three to four in critical condition.
According to Khaled Megahed, a spokesman for the health ministry, the injured suffered from burns of varying degrees.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the blast as a 'terrorist incident' in a social media post, offering his condolences to the victims' families and the Egyptian people.
Initial investigations suggested that the Hasm group, an armed affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood, may have been behind the attack.
